How to Build a Support Network While Living Far from Your Family
A lack of a support network is one of the greatest sources of emotional distress during immigration.
At first, building new relationships may seem difficult. But friendships and meaningful connections in adulthood are built through consistency, shared experiences, and presence.
Possible ways to build a support network:
take part in in-person activities (courses, sports, cultural groups);
connect with immigrant communities;
be consistent with small, regular meetups;
accept that meaningful relationships take time to develop;
allow relationships to be imperfect—not every connection has to become a deep friendship.
Remember:
A support network is not about the number of people around you. It's about the quality of the connections.
Having one or two people with whom you can be completely honest can make a significant difference to your emotional well-being.
